Bobby Kennedy and his son, David. David was the most sensitive and shy of his siblings, and had a special bond with his father.
On June 4, 1968, David nearly drowned while he and his siblings were swimming. He had been knocked over by a wave and got trapped on the bottom by the undertow. Bobby dove under the water and rescued him, injuring his own forehead. David vowed to repay him someday. Just after midnight that night, David watched his father claim victory in the California primary, and then watched his father’s assassination moments later.
David wrote in a letter to his mother at Christmas, “There will be no more football with Daddy, no more swimming with him, no more riding and no more camping with him. But he was the best father there ever was and I would rather have him for a father for the length of time I did than any other father for a million years.”
“But he was the best father there ever was and I would rather have him for a father for the length of time I did than any other father for a million years” My daughter feels the same way about her father.
